If ever a girl personified the spirit of Cosmo, then this month’s cover star is that woman. Jamelia Davis, 25, is living proof that you don’t have to be born with advantages to be a success; that everyone has it in them to be the best they can be.
Jamelia, who grew up on an estate in Birmingham, became a R&B sensation when, aged just 15, a record label heard her amazing voice and signed her up. When she was 19 she had her first child while in an abusive relationship, but she didn’t let that hold her back. By 23, Jamelia was back – a single mum with three more massive hit singles and a second album that topped the first, if that was possible. Now, with a new relationship (with footballer Darren Byfield) and a new baby, she’s back with a third album. Talk about overachieving.
I met Jamelia at Cosmo’s fifth annual Beauty Awards and I was struck by how, despite being an internationally renowned singer-songwriter, she is still an incredibly normal woman (give or take the amazing legs, obviously). She’s astonished when she gets invited to celebrity parties or finds herself sitting next to Madonna at dinner (who hasn’t had the feeling that any minute you could get found out – and consequently thrown out?!).
And she was like a kid in a sweet shop (or should that be the Cosmo features team in Topshop!) when given the opportunity to test hundreds of hair and makeup products as a Beauty Awards judge.
The fact that Jamelia’s life has been less than perfect means she doesn’t take her success for granted. As she put it herself in conversation with Cosmo’s celebrity editor, Lianne Ludlow: “I’m just a normal girl from Birmingham and I’m being interviewed by Cosmopolitan. I’m on the front cover! I can’t even explain how much of a big thing that is for me.”
