Small 5.1 Speakers for my Marantz SR4200 AMP

Hi all, I have a Marantz SR4200 amp and used to run some large 5.1 Eltax
Evolution speakers from it. It sounded great to me, but I have had to sell
the speakers because they literally dont fit in my new house. I am now
after some small (ish) speakers but dont want to spend more than £100
secondhand from fleabay. I dont want the fronts/rears to be any taller than
6 inches, centre speaker+sub size doesnt matter. Any recommendations ?

Do I need to somehow match them to my Marantz ? (I dont know much about this
sort of stuff).

This may sound odd, but I am more concerned about size/price than amazing
quality. I purchased a Sony 5.1 setup from ebay for £35 but my TV speakers
sounded better !!! Dont know what I was thinking....

Thanks in advance

Me too. An excellent budget amp, let down only by the lack of a 5.1
analogue input for SACD/DVD-A.

Rather outside your budget, but the Canton CD1 / CD101 sets are
excellent. Check out the Powerbuy on the Speakers forum at avforums.com.
I have the CD1 and am very impressed with it.

I think you'll struggle to find 5 decent passive speakers plus active
sub for under £100.

Not really. So long as their impedance is within the Marantz's
capabilities (6-16 ohms, IIRC) you'll be fine. All this talk of matching
amps and speakers applies when one or both components have significant
characteristics - matching "bright" with "bright" will give "too
bright". The Marantz is fairly neutral, so you just need good speakers.

...and I suspect you'll find the same at £100, as well. I don't judge
quality by price, but below a certain point, too many corners have to be
cut to achieve the sound.

You may get lucky on eBay, of course, but I wouldn't spend under £250
new on a set.
