Viz Magazine Comics Outrageous Adult Humour In A Comic
Product Information
Viz is an adult comic that was established way back in 1979. Cartoonist Graham Dury, in a recent Coffee Table book celebrating 25 years of Viz, stated that "We pride ourselves on the fact that you're no cleverer when you've read Viz.", an ethos that has clearly been well loved in its many years of production. As well as being the most popular magazine in the country for a short period and enjoying a sustained period of success as the third most popular Viz has caused controversy at every step and loved every minute of it.

When Viz was first printed it was meant to parody everything from popular kid's comics like The Beano and Dandy to tabloid newspapers and everything in between. As such, there are numerous characters and sections that are almost satirical in their appearance and humour.
Badly Drawn Man was only a one off character, and yet this single appearance was enough for the band Badly Drawn Boy to use a parody of his name. In return, Viz created a character called Badly Overdrawn Boy; a busker sat next to the bank machine trying to get money because he's broke.
Biffa Bacon was spawned from the Bacon family and was clearly a parody of Bully Beef, found in the Dandy. Black Bag, another Viz character, was based on Black Bob from The Dandy.
Parodies of these characters led to a long battle between the Viz and D. C. Thomson & Co Ltd. After being threatened with legal action Viz created a character called D. C. Thomson the Humourless Scottish Git who attempted to sue anyone possible for breach of copyright. This included one episode where D. C. Thomson attempted to sue a woman for calling her son Dennis a menace. The Dandy attempted to retaliate against Viz only to find a new character called Korky the Twat, named after Korky the Cat.
MP Louise Ellman attempted to have the character Boy Scouse banned because of the bad example it set and the depiction of Liverpudlians. Boy Scouse was a Liverpool school boy and scout that earned badges for mugging old ladies and for daubing graffiti on walls. Captain Morgan and his Hammond Organ was a character that never quite made the pages of Viz. He was due to sail around the Caribbean singing along to well known songs playing his Hammond Organ. Legal action was threatened and Viz creators scrapped the character.
Probably the most famous of all Viz characters are the Fat Slags, San and Tray that desire nothing but fags, chips, and men. This strip was so popular that a cartoon series was created as well as, incredibly, a movie. Along with the Fat Slags an impressively large cast that make regular appearances joins old favourites Roger Mellie and Johnny Fartpants. Billy the Fish, the modern parents, Sid the sexist, Viz is published ten times a year, up slightly from the previous 6, and is definitely not for kids.
